Film Synopsis: SLEEPLESS IN SEATTLE

Sam’s friends and colleagues all try to help him as he struggles to keep it going for his eight-year old son, Jonah, and himself after his beloved wife passes away. He feels he needs a ‘real change’ to get over it all, a new city- some place where every time he goes around a corner, he doesn’t think of Maggie, his deceased wife. He decides on Seattle.
On the other hand in Baltimore, happily (or so she claims) engaged Annie wonders every time someone refers to their love story as ‘magic’, if she feels the same way about her fiancé, Walter. While at times she feels embarrassed of his quirks, he on his end doesn’t quite seem to appreciate her humour.
The story takes a curious turn when the eight-year-old Jonah calls up a radio show on Christmas evening, a show that broadcasts across America, where the radio jockey is talking about ‘wishes and dreams’ on the day. The little boy wishes for a new wife for his dad. Among hundreds of other Americans tuned into the show, Annie also happens to be a listener as she drives back from her parents’. The RJ manages to get Jonah get his father on the call, and upon hearing him talk so fondly about his dead wife, Annie feels a strange pull towards this man. The RJ tags Sam as ‘Sleepless in Seattle’ for his inability to sleep over the love void in his life.
The story picks up when Sam’s appearance on this radio show leads to him receiving dozens of letters from women across the country. After her initial hesitations (for she is already engaged), Annie too writes to him, addressing it to ‘Sleepless and Son’. How she sitting across the other end in America feels this irresistible urge to connect with Sam is almost incredible. Though with her hesitations, Annie leaves no stone unturned to get to Sam, going to the extent of hiring a private detective to find out more about him!
What happens next is that, through her letter, little Jonah takes instant liking to Annie and urges his dad to consider meeting with her. Sam though, dismisses the idea of seeing her, considering the geography. But Jonah is not the one to give up. What makes the movie totally worth the watch is to see cute little Jonah have stubborn arguments with his dad over travelling to see Annie.
You have to watch the movie to find out how Jonah has his way with his dad, and what fate intends for Annie and Sam.
Though for me it was a one-time watch, I could totally watchit again for the adorable Jonah alone!😋
I advertised for a research assistant at the local college and asked each applicant the reason for their wanting it. Ollie’s answer was the best.
